At least five (5) passengers have been confirmed dead in another fatal accident on Accra to Kumasi Highway.
The accident occurred at Kwahu Oframase near Nkawkaw on Sunday.
The suspect driver Shadrack Boadu, 23 was in charge of a Mercedes Sprinter bus with registration number GC 6521 – 21 with eleven passengers on board from Accra towards Kumasi.
However, on reaching a section of the road at Kwahu Oframase on Nkawkaw -Accra highway, he rammed into a stationary Daf Articulator truck with Burkina – Faso registration number BF 9290D603 parked at the nearside shoulder of the road when facing Nkawkaw direction, after wrong overtaking.
Police went to the scene and with the assistance of personnel from the Divisional fire service, extricated the injured passengers and rushed them to the Holy Family Hospital and Kenop Care Hospital, Nkawkaw respectively.
Five male unidentified adults among the injured were confirmed dead by the medical officer at Holy Family Hospital whilst suspect driver Shadrack Boadu and victims Addae Joseph, 32, Abdul Latif Shaibu , 48, Richard Hanu, 31 and Suraku Shaibu, 34 were admitted to the hospital.
Mary Boakye, 67, was sent to Kenop Care hospital.
Bodies of the deceased have since been deposited at the Holy Family Hospital morgue hospital for preservation, identification, and autopsy.
Meanwhile, nine (9) students of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) also died while over a dozen others were seriously injured in a fatal accident at Asuboi a community along the Accra to Kumasi Highway Sunday, March 13, 2022, at about 3:30am.
The Public Relations Officer of the Eastern Regional Police Command DSP Ebenezer Tetteh explained that the suspect driver yet to be identified in charge of the Hyundai Universe commercial bus with registration number AK 324-22 with the students aboard was from Sunyani towards Accra.
However, on reaching a section of the road at Asuboi on the Accra -Kumasi dual carriage road he failed to observe traffic ahead, apparently, he was alleged to be sleeping behind the steering wheels hence crushed into a stationary forty footer container loaded with wood which fell partially on the road after involved in an accident.
DSP Ebenezer Tetteh said, eight 8 of the students died on the spot whilst one died later at the hospital.
Many others who sustained various degrees of injuries were rushed to Suhum Government hospital where they have been admitted for treatment
In a separate development, another fatal accident happened earlier which claimed the life of one passenger at the Akyem Anyinasin stretch of the Accra Kumasi Highway.
18 passengers also sustained injuries.
The accident occurred after Toyota Hiace collided head-on with a Kia Rhino with registration number GX 8415-18 after wrong overtaking at a curve.
