Dozens of passengers are feared dead in a fatal accident on Bibiani to Sefwi Bekwai Highway in the Western North Region.
Witnesses estimate the number of deaths to about 30 based on the fact that they were seriously injured and motionless at the spot however they are yet to be declared medically dead.
“The sad news here at Bebiani Awiaso Bekwai highway is that there is a fatal accident between a sprinter bus and a metro mass bus from Kumasi to Sefwi Wiaso. All passengers on board the Sprinter about 22 have all died ” a witness said.
The accident occurred Monday morning.
At least, 43 people were killed and 202 injured in 196 road crashes from 24 to December 31 last year and New Year, across the country.
The deceased comprised 37 males and six females, and there were 33 pedestrian knockdowns, involving 91 commercial vehicles, 142 private vehicles and 76 motorcycles.
Greater Accra region recorded the highest cases of crashes(65) followed by the Eastern region, with 30 crashes.
The Director of operations of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, Superintendent Dr Samuel Sasu Mensah, who disclosed these in an interview with the media attributed the causes of the accidents to indiscipline, speeding and wrongful overtaking.
Ten(10) persons from two families have died in two separate accidents at Nkawie in Ashanti Region and Dowenya in Greater Accra Region.
A family of six(6) died on Kumasi-Nkawie to Sefwi highways on Saturday 8th January 2022 evening.
The six (6) victims include a couple, their Mother In-law and three children in the car who were returning from a wedding when they met their untimely deaths.
The husband who was driving the vehicle wrongfully overtook a car ahead of him but to avoid a head-on collision veered off the road and plunged into a river. All six aboard the vehicle drowned.
The deceased wife Eunice Maame Fosua, was a Community nurse with Forifori Health Center in Afram Plains South District in the Eastern region but currently on study leave studying post-basic midwifery
