The local council of churches in Koforidua, the Eastern regional capital, are asking what Member of Parliaments (MPs) for New Juaben South and north are doing to help religious bodies in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.
According to the religious leaders, both MPs have failed to contribute their quota in assisting churches as far as plans to reopen churches are concerned.
During a meeting with the New Juaben South Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Isaac Apaw Gyasi on Friday, June 5th, 2020, the pastors stressed that MPs in other areas of the country are always been heard in the media helping to fumigate churches and also provide PPEs before the reopening of churches, as announced by President Akufo Addo last Sunday.
“So MCE, what are our MPs also doing to support us? It seems we are not having MPs in Koforidua because we are yet to see any of them coming forward to help the churches. We always hear on the radio of how some MPs are helping to fumigate churches and mosques, but we are not seeing anything being done by our own” some pastors at the meeting queried.
The men of God, however, appealed to the President through the MCE to consider easing the restrictions a bit, as most churches are finding it difficult to meet the current laid down protocols.
Meanwhile, the MCE Isaac Apaw Gyasi on his part appealed to the religious leaders as a matter of health concern go by the President’s directives to ensure the spread of the virus does not escalate.
He, therefore, emphasized that a task force has been formed to ensure all churches comply with the protocols set out without any fear or favor.
He also revealed Koforidua currently has recorded over 25 confirmed cases of the COVID-19 and urged religious leaders to help in the fight of the pandemic.
