From 2019 to June 2022, the Zipline Drone Center at Omenako in the Eastern Region has done 36,614 deliveries, according to Regional Minister, Honourable Seth Kwame Acheampong.
The project christened: “Fly to save a life,” operate 24 hours a day, throughout the week, from the distribution center equipped with drones to deliver essential medicines and blood products to 535 health facilities in 32 Districts in the Eastern Region.
Hon. Seth Kwame Acheampong, speaking at a press conference in Accra said every single life in the country is precious and, thus, the Government was committed to providing access to quality healthcare for the mother, child, parent, and all citizens to ensure healthy living.
He said the total number of blood delivered during the period was 4,100 and vaccines are 154,976.
Comparing work done at Omenako Center from 2019, the Minister said the total products delivered in 2019 was 23,873 while in 2020, the products delivered were 110,851 and 340,719 in 2021.
The Minister said a total of 91,257 products have been delivered from January to June 2022.
The medical drone service is provided by Zipline International, the San Francisco-based UAV manufacturer and logistics service provider.
Since establishing itself in Ghana in 2019, Zipline Ghana has expanded to six distribution centers in remote areas of the country, making Ghana home to the world’s largest fleet of medical-delivery drones.
Zipline, which launched in 2014, started its operations in Rwanda and later in Ghana where it used its autonomous electric drones to deliver life-saving medical supplies, including blood and vaccines.
