At least nine students of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) have been confirmed dead in a fatal accident near Suhum on Accra to Kumasi Highway.
The accident occurred Sunday dawn at about 3:30am.
According to the Suhum Police, the suspect driver yet to be identified as driving a Hyundai Universe commercial bus with registration number AK 324-22 with the students aboard from was Sunyani towards Accra.
However, on reaching a section of the road at Asuboi near Suhum on the Accra -Kumasi dual carriage road, he failed to observe traffic ahead whilst allegedly to be sleeping in the process he crashed into a forty footer container loaded with wood which fell partially on the road after an accident.
According to the PRO of the Eastern Regional Police Command DSP Ebenezer Tetteh, 8 of the victims died on the spot while one other was pronounced dead at the Suhum government hospital.
A dozen others who sustained injuries are in admission at the same hospital.
The death toll is likely to increase considering the severity of the injuries sustained.
The bodies of the deceased students were deposited at the morgue of the same hospital for identification and preservation.
The accident vehicles have been towed.
