The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Abuakwa North, Hon. Charles Darko Yeboah, has appealed to parents and guardians to stop hiding children living with disabilities and instead enrol them in special schools to enable them reach their full potential.
According to him, every child, regardless of their disability, deserves access to quality education and opportunities to develop their talents.
Speaking during the presentation of startup items to 50 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) at the New Tafo in the Eastern Region, Hon.Charles Darko Yeboah specifically encouraged parents to enrol children with disabilities at the OPASS Special School, stressing that many of them have the potential to become future leaders if given the necessary care and education.
He noted that the Municipal Assembly, through the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development, will continue community sensitisation programmes to encourage the registration of Persons with Disabilities and raise awareness on available support services.
The MCE also commended the Mahama-led government for increasing the Disability Fund allocation from three percent to five percent of the District Assemblies Common Fund, describing the move as a major boost that will enable the Assembly to extend support to more Persons with Disabilities.
At the event, the Assembly distributed various startup items to 50 beneficiaries under the Disability Fund to promote economic independence. The items included chest freezers, industrial and manual sewing machines, ovens, popcorn-making machines, groceries, hair dryers, wax prints, bags of charcoal, palm fruits, palm oil, vegetable oil, maize, groundnuts and gari.
The beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the government and the Assembly, saying the support would improve their livelihoods while encouraging greater inclusion of Persons with Disabilities in society.
