A suspect believed to be a member of notorious goat thief gang operating in Abuakwa North municipality in the Eastern Region has been arrested by members of Akyem Maase Community Watchdog committee.
Mybrytfmonline.com has gathered that the thieves invaded the community last night onboard a taxi cab with registration number GT 5010-18 to steal goats. However, members of the community watchdog committee who were on alert pursued the suspects till their car developed a fault after hitting an uncompleted bridge on the Akyem Maase to Akyem Tafo road under construction while escaping to tafo area.
The main suspects who were onboard the cars however managed to escape into the bush before the arrival of the community watchdog committee at the scene. The watch dog committee decided to lay ambush till the next morning to check if the suspects will return to take the car away.
According to Joseph Okyere alias Aban, spokesperson for the Watchdog committee, about an hour later a towing vehicle emerged at the scene in attempt to tow away the vehicle. Joseph said, the suspect was arrested and interrogate which he said his friend called that his car developed fault on the road therefore should come and tow it away.
The Watchdog committee members noticed it is the same car the goat thieves abandoned hence took the suspect to Akyem Tafo Police station and handed him to the police.
Joseph Okyere explained that stolen goats found at the boot of the vehicle escaped except one. He also said, small quantities of dried corn and a medicine believed to mix with the corn to drowse the animals as well as catapults were retrieved from the car.
The goat and the items have been handed over to the Police who are investigating the incident.
Many communities in Abuakwa South municipality including Akyem Maase have been lamenting over rampant goat thievery in the area. Many farmers have lost their goats to thieves who invade the communities to steal goats into waiting vehicles and abscond with them.
