NPP National Women’s Organiser, Mavis Hawa Koomson, is advocating for the legalization of pepper spray in Ghana, claiming that it saved her life during the Ablekuma North incident.
Speaking on an Accra-based radio station, she said she always keeps pepper spray on hand and uses it in dangerous situations.
“With what happened in Ablekuma North, I would have died if not for pepper spray,” she said.
“I always carry it around, and until that day, nobody knew that I carry pepper spray around,” she added.
According to Hawa Koomson, the event showed how important it is for people to have access to self-defence tools in hazardous circumstances.
“Even the police in Ablekuma North didn’t know I had it on me,” she said.
She contended that Ghana might emulate other nations’ use of pepper spray as a weapon for personal safety.
“Abroad, we give it to people for safety,” she said.
The NPP Women’s Organiser stated that she wants the government to legalise its use, but she would support a licence system if needed.
“If we have to get a licence for pepper spray, we will. The government should legalise the use of pepper spray,” she said.
