Great Olympics marksman Gladson Awako has revealed drawing inspiration football veterans like Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to keep him going.
Awako, a member of the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup-winning team has been magnificent for his outfit in the ongoing Ghana Premier League campaign.
His mouthwatering performance for the ‘Dade boy’ has won him many admirers and is currently in contention for the Player of the Month for December.
The former Heart of Lions and Berekum Chelsea midfielder returned to play in the local league after stints with TP Mazembe (DR Congo) and Phoenix Rising (USA).
The 30-year-old is charting a path often dreaded by his peers. Often times, players of his ilk shy away from returning to play in the local league for fear of being tagged as old and perhaps incapable of playing in such a physically demanding terrain.
Awako, however, believes the older one gets, the more experienced he becomes and this helps in improving one’s skill set as a player. He likened this to the situations of Modric, Ronaldo and Ibrahimovic who are all key for their respective clubs despite their ages.
Speaking to Asempa FM, he said, “With football, you get to enjoy it the most when you’re experienced in age and play. I can cite examples in the stories of Luka Modric, (Cristiano) Ronaldo and Zlatan (Ibrahimovic),” Awako told Asempa FM in an interview.
“At their respective ages now, they are still prominent in their teams. Modric won the Ballon D’or at the age of 32-33.
“At this age, I feel I am now enjoying the game more,” he revealed.
