The current stand of government to expatriate Ghanaians abroad back into the country seems not to be the best choice for Ghana considering the daily increment in confirmed cases of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ghana, last week, took delivery of over 200 citizens who were deported from Kuwait, a situation the country could not have ignored as their stay in that country was illegal.
Aside from that, the current action is of government bringing back home other Ghanaians perceived to be stranded is a deadly decision to be taken as the country’s confirmed cases has surpassed 9,400 with 44 death recorded.
Surprisingly, the decision to expatriate Ghanaians was announced after President Akufo Addo eased restrictions on public gathering on Sunday 31st May 2020.
The Electoral Commission, just a day after the announcement by the President went ahead to do piloting on the use of the new machines for the 2020 December elections, a situation that attracted a lot of condemnation from a section of the public on how the EC could still go ahead and gather people for the exercise amidst the daily spread of the virus.
The Electoral Commission is also expected to start registration for the compilation of new voters registers in the coming weeks despite several rejections from other stakeholders, especially the opposition National Democratic Congress.
However, the question is, is the government expatriating Ghanaians back home to partake in the registration exercise ahead of the general elections in December as been already speculated by some individuals and cooperate bodies?
Even though the government has over the period debunked allegations of playing politics with the pandemic, it seems its actions are pointing directly to that.
Meanwhile, the National Identification Authority has also lined up processes to distribute over 3million Ghana cards to persons who have been registered without receiving their cards as well as mopping up the uncompleted exercise in the Eastern region.
As of now, the country has already expatriate Ghanaians from Nigeria and the USA, with those in the UK and Dubai soon to follow in the coming weeks.
Most Ghanaians, since the outbreak of the virus, have challenged the government on the approach of fighting the pandemic as confirmed cases seem soaring higher.
