A moving Mazda saloon car with registration number GR 1378-16 caught fire on Saturday evening, October 10, 2026, near Acapoco Bar along the Koforidua Technical University road in the Eastern Region.
The incident occurred at about 5:40 p.m. while the car was being driven by a mechanic, with the owner seated beside him.
Eyewitnesses said the fire started around the engine compartment, prompting the driver and owner to seek assistance from passersby to prevent the vehicle from being completely destroyed.
Initial efforts could not open the bonnet as the fire spreads quickly around the engine.
A man identified as Steel, the owner of 90’s Bar, emerged as a key figure in the rescue effort after forcibly opening the bonnet in a rambol style.
Drivers and other passersby subsequently used fire extinguishers, soapy water and sachet water to douse the flames preventing it from totally consumming the car.
Personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service arrived at the scene a few minutes after being alerted by eyewitnesses.
However, the fire had already been extinguished, and the vehicle had been moved to a safe location.
The fire destroyed several components and installations around the engine compartment, melting parts of the vehicle’s fittings.
No information was immediately available on the cause of the fire or whether anyone sustained injuries.
