Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu is expected to meet the leadership of the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) this week, alongside the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, in an effort to resolve the association’s ongoing strike.
The meeting follows a press statement issued by the Ministry of Education on October 11, 2026, announcing an urgent engagement with GAUA and the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) on Monday, October 12, 2026, to find an amicable solution to the industrial action.
GAUA’s strike centres on disparities in Market Premium and other allowances between teaching and non-teaching senior members of public universities.
In the statement, the Ministry reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing the concerns of organised labour through established negotiation mechanisms and constructive engagement.
Government has also urged all parties to approach the discussions in good faith, stressing the impact of the ongoing industrial action on students, university communities and the broader national interest.
The Ministry further called on GAUA’s leadership to seize the opportunity for meaningful dialogue and collaborate with relevant stakeholders to resolve the impasse.
It expressed hope that the meeting would yield a positive outcome and pave the way for a swift return to normal academic and administrative activities at affected tertiary institutions.
The outcome of the discussions is expected to be crucial in determining the next steps towards ending the strike and restoring normal operations in the affected public universities.
