Public basic schools across the country have resumed academic activities following the suspension of a nationwide strike by pre-tertiary teacher unions over outstanding allowances and salary arrears.
The strike, declared on September 25, 2026, by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers, was suspended on Friday, October 9, following an agreement with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC).
In the New Juaben South Municipality of the Eastern Region, schools visited by Bryt FM observed return to normal academic activities, with teachers present and lessons underway.
At Wesley Methodist “A” Basic School, Headteacher Madam Grace Sintim Aboagye said 15 of the school’s 16 teachers had reported for duty as teaching and learning resumed.
She expressed confidence that the lost instructional hours would be recovered to minimise the impact of the strike on pupils’ academic work.

Meanwhile, the New Juaben South Municipal Education Director, Mustapha Haruna Appiah, toured various schools in the municipality to monitor the resumption of academic activities and ensure teachers were at post.
The visits formed part of efforts to ensure a smooth return to the classroom and restore effective teaching and learning following the industrial action.

Teachers are hopeful that measures to recover the lost contact hours will help them cover the required syllabus and prepare pupils adequately for their examinations while await government fulfils its part of agreenment .
