Former independent candidate and current Presiding member for Akwapim North Municipal Assembly, Hon Ofei Asiedu has expressed his disappointment in Martin Amidu’s resignation as Special Prosecutor.
Hon Ofei Asiedu said it emphatically that he is disappointed and worried by the resignation of the Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu.
He said his resignation did not mean President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was not committed to fighting corruption.
According to him, Mr. Martin Amidu should have kept mute since he swore an oath of secrecy, then after the election, he meets the president and addresses his grievances peacefully.
He added that political parties will now enjoy winners take all syndrome because Martin Amidu has made it clear that other party members cannot be trusted when appointed to high offices.
He said the fact that the President even appointed Mr. Amidu, a member of the opposition NDC, was a sign that he (President) had good intentions by setting up the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
“The President showed good faith by appointing someone, not from his party. Mr. Amidu is a former Deputy Attorney-General, Attorney-General, and also running mate of the NDC.
“It is not as if the President appointed someone who will do the bidding of the government. That implies that there was a desire to have an independent body. That is inconsistent with what Mr. Amidu is saying. What is the evidence of the so-called interference Mr. Amidu had suggested?” he asked.
Hon Ofei Asiedu said the President acted on the corruption-risk assessment by referring the Agyapa deal back to Parliament.
