Tema Mayor Ebi Bright received a formal petition from the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU) of Ghana, addressed to His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama.
The Union is calling on the Government to reject any attempt to sell 70% of Government’s equity in VALCO.
On behalf of the President and the City of Tema, the Mayor welcomed the Union leadership and thanked them for the disciplined and peaceful nature of their march to our premises.
“I want to thank you for the peaceful manner of your march to the premises of the city of Tema. I am also grateful to the security forces for providing protection – not only for the Union members as citizens of Tema, but also for us – and to ensure that this march has taken place, as large as the numbers are, and as forcefully as your presence is felt.”
She drew comfort from their submission, which went beyond defending national assets. It also reflected a growing confidence in the President’s leadership and his appointees overseeing State-Owned Enterprises.
“This was not only in concern for preserving the dignity, integrity, and power of the Republic of Ghana, but also in recognition that under the leadership of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, and the appointees he has put in place, you are beginning to see the results and effects of good governance. It is an admission of your faith and trust in the capability of Ghanaians – especially under his leadership – to produce better results through our enterprises for the State and for the Ghanaian people.”
I reassured the Union that this is a listening government.
“In good faith, I want to reassure you that this is a listening government. We will send this message across. No matter what, you must keep faith in the good intentions of the government and its resolve not only to reset the nation, but to ensure jobs, prosperity, and economic viability for all Ghanaians.”
She added. “I concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to transparency and engagement”.
“Your concerns will be addressed in the most transparent and engaging manner we can guarantee.”
