MTN Ghana has equipped its employees with cybersecurity knowledge and skills to help combat cybercrime and extend online safety awareness to customers and the general public.
The initiative is aimed at empowering employees to apply the knowledge gained in their daily activities and help educate the public on how to identify and avoid growing cyber threats, including suspicious links, unsafe sharing of personal information and unverified online content.
Charles Ohene Oti, an IT Governance, Risk and Compliance professional at MTN Ghana, said the training was important as more people increasingly relied on digital platforms for communication, business and other everyday activities.
He explained that the growing digital environment had also created new opportunities for cybercriminals to target individuals, businesses and organisations, making cybersecurity awareness critical.
Mr. Ohene Oti urged employees to serve as ambassadors of cybersecurity by translating the knowledge acquired through the training into practical guidance for customers and members of the public.
According to him, simple measures such as thinking before clicking on links, using strong passwords, enabling multi-factor authentication and reporting suspicious activities could significantly reduce exposure to cyber threats.
“Be alert online. Don’t click on suspicious links, don’t share personal information carelessly, and always verify before you trust,” he advised.
He also encouraged social media users to pause and think before posting or sharing information, particularly when they were unsure of its authenticity.
Mr. Ohene Oti further urged the public to properly secure their mobile phones and other digital devices by using strong passwords and available security features.
He stressed the need for people to verify suspicious links and information before accessing or acting on them, noting that responsible online behaviour could go a long way towards protecting personal and corporate information.
“Cybersecurity starts with each one of us. When we all do our part, we create a safer digital environment for everyone,” he said.
He added that cybersecurity was a shared responsibility and called on employees, customers, individuals and organisations to adopt safer digital habits to help create a more secure digital environment.
