The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs on Saturday, 7th February 2026, monitored the February National Sanitation Day (NSD) exercise across selected Municipal Assemblies in the Greater Accra Region.
Monitoring commenced at the Accra Mall and continued through Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly, covering areas around Fiesta Royal, the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) enclave and sections of the N1 towards Lapaz. Sanitation activities were ongoing with Assembly officials, with some hawkers joining voluntarily; however, heaps of gathered debris were observed awaiting evacuation, and the matter was promptly brought to the attention of the Assembly.
At Lapaz under the Okaikwei North Municipal Assembly, participation was encouraging, with shops closed and residents, traders and Assembly staff actively involved. The team further observed activities at Awoshie and Baahyard in Ablekuma North, and at Dansoman Last Stop and its environs in Ablekuma West, where Assembly staff were engaged in desilting works with support from some community members.
Despite these efforts, a key observation was the generally low participation of the wider public, with the exercise largely driven by the District Assemblies.
The Ministry therefore reiterated that National Sanitation Day, observed every first Saturday of the month as declared by the President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, requires active citizen involvement.
“National Sanitation Day is not an Assembly activity alone. Every Ghanaian has a role to play in keeping their environment clean, starting from their homes and immediate surroundings.”
Citizens are encouraged to clean their frontages, desilt drains and dustbins, while Assemblies facilitate supervision and the carting of waste, as Ghana works towards cleaner and healthier communities.
