The Pentagon is reportedly preparing to deploy about 3,000 troops from the U.S. Army’s elite 82nd Airborne Division to the Middle East as tensions with Iran continue, according to reports by The Wall Street Journal. While U.S. officials say no final decision has been made to send ground forces into Iran, the deployment would give President Donald Trump more military options, including securing strategic areas or reopening the vital Strait of Hormuz.
The 82nd Airborne is the U.S. Army’s rapid-response unit, capable of deploying anywhere in the world within 24 hours. Reports also suggest around 2,500 Marines from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit could be involved in potential operations in the region.
Meanwhile, the United Kingdom is preparing to lead a multinational maritime mission to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz when tensions ease, as the waterway remains critical to global oil and energy supply.
