The Eastern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has ordered the immediate temporary closure of Okuapeman and Mount Sinai Senior High Schools, both at Akropong in the Akuapem North Municipality, following violent clashes between students of the two schools.
The clashes, which reportedly started around 2:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, led to the vandalisation of property and the setting of fire to some facilities. The cause of the incident is not yet known.
The Eastern Regional Minister, Mrs Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, announced the closure when she led a REGSEC delegation to the two schools to assess the situation and obtain first-hand information.
Mrs Awatey expressed disappointment over the incident, noting that it comes at a time when the government is working tirelessly to reset the nation and provide infrastructure and teaching and learning materials to improve education.
She condemned the riot in strong terms and called for immediate investigations into the matter to bring the perpetrators to book.
The Minister said the recurrence of such disturbances in second-cycle institutions must stop, and cautioned students to be obedient, take their academic work seriously and refrain from acts of vandalism.
For his part, the Eastern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Joseph Owusu Bempah, advised the students to live upright lives and leave behind a good legacy.
He urged them to make a good name for themselves and not be remembered for negative acts, warning that the police would not hesitate to deal with any student found engaging in unacceptable activities.
The Headmaster of Okuapeman Senior High School, Rev. Richard Koranteng Afari, said six of his students sustained varying degrees of injuries and were sent to the hospital. Four of them were treated and discharged, while the remaining two are still on admission.
