Honouring Our Brave Men and Women in Uniform to Serve Ghana 🇬🇭
As Minister for Defence, I had an unfiltered All Ranks durbar (Open Forum with Q & A) with officers, soldiers, and Defence Civilian Staff of Garrisons 1 & 5 at Burma Camp yesterday.
I commended the troops for their bravery, professionalism, and commitment.
I urged them to deal ruthlessly with those few within their ranks who have deviated or may deviate from the professionalism expected of the Ghana Armed Forces.
I condemned the destruction of the cherished statue in Bawku over the weekend and assured that the government shall rebuild the statue and expects appropriate sanctions to be meted out to the perpetrators.
I further decried the shooting of the two soldiers in Bawku.
Additionally, I cautioned soldiers who clandestinely provide guard duties for unauthorized persons and urged the military High Command to deal with this illegal phenomenon in earnest.
To encourage professionalism, I made a personal donation of Ghc10,000 to a serving soldier who refused to be bribed while fighting galamsey.
The soldier has also been promoted by the Chief of the Defence Staff.
I reminded troops of their Honour Code:
“The safety, honour, and welfare of your country come first… The honour, welfare, and comfort of the men you command come next… Your own ease, comfort, and safety come last.”
And I assured them of the Ghana Armed Forces I would want to leave behind: “A modernized, expanded, and responsive military with happier troops than they have ever been.”
In resetting Ghana, we seek to, among other things:
- Enhance Operational Capacity: Better response to security threats,
- Improve Troop Welfare: Positive work environment, competitive benefits, and
- Strategic Partnerships: Global collaborations for enhanced capabilities
This means we’re committed to supporting our troops with:
- Quality Healthcare: Access to top-notch medical care, including funding from the Mahama Cares Initiative,
- Fair Compensation: Regular salary reviews for fairness and equity,
- Infrastructure Development: Upgrades to barracks with 10,000 new housing units, equipment, and logistics, and
- Professional Growth: Opportunities for training and development.
Let’s unite for a Stronger Ghana!
