A three-day Safe Motherhood Training Workshop for midwives has ended in Koforidua with a renewed call to strengthen emergency response to save mothers newborns.
The annual workshop is aimed at strengthening the capacity of midwives in managing maternal and newborn emergencies.
Organized by the Government of Ghana under the UNFPA 8th Country Programme (2023-2027), the training was held under the theme: “Basic Emergency Obstetrics and Newborn Care.”
Participants were drawn from CHPS Compounds and Health Centres across the Eastern Region.
The workshop covered critical areas including postpartum haemorrhage (PPH), hypertensive disorders in pregnancy, breech delivery, preterm and premature births, emergency obstetric and newborn care, respectful maternity care, and practical sessions on managing maternal and newborn emergencies.
Ghana Health Service data for 2021-2023 presented at the training revealed that obstetric haemorrhage remains the leading cause of maternal deaths in Ghana, accounting for 34.88%, representing about 294 women annually. Hypertensive disorders in pregnancy, stillbirth and the puerperium accounted for 23.37% of maternal deaths.
Speaking at the programme, the Deputy Director of Public Health at the Eastern Regional Health Directorate, Dr. Moses Barimah Djimatey, urged health workers to provide every patient with proper, professional and respectful care.
He stressed that patients should not need personal connections or calls from colleagues to receive appropriate attention at any health facility.
Dr. Djimatey added that the training seeks to strengthen the practical skills of midwives in managing obstetric and newborn emergencies, improve respectful maternity care and contribute to reducing preventable maternal and newborn deaths.
On his part, the Eastern Regional Coordinating Director, Ebenezer Amoah, described the programme as timely. He urged participants to take the lessons seriously and impart the knowledge acquired to other colleagues to improve maternal and newborn care in the region.
