President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans by the government to establish three new technical universities as part of a broader strategy to strengthen skills development and expand access to quality higher education in Ghana.
Speaking during a national address on Friday, February 27, President Mahama emphasized that the move is aimed at equipping young Ghanaians with practical knowledge and employable skills that meet the demands of a rapidly evolving job market. He noted that technical education plays a crucial role in national development, particularly in areas such as engineering, technology, manufacturing, construction, and applied sciences.
According to the President, the creation of these institutions will help bridge the gap between academic training and industry needs. He explained that while traditional universities provide strong theoretical foundations, technical universities focus more on hands-on training, innovation, and problem-solving—skills that are essential for entrepreneurship and industrial growth.
“Education remains one of the most powerful tools for transforming a nation,” he stated. “By investing in technical and vocational training, we are investing directly in the future of our youth and the economic prosperity of our country.”
President Mahama further indicated that the new universities will be strategically located to ensure equitable access across different regions. They will be equipped with modern laboratories, workshops, and technology centers to provide students with real-world experience and industry exposure. Partnerships with private sector organizations are also expected to enhance internship opportunities and job placements for graduates.
He added that the government’s vision is not only to increase enrollment in tertiary institutions but also to ensure that graduates leave school with practical competencies that make them competitive both locally and internationally.
The establishment of the three technical universities forms part of a larger educational reform agenda aimed at strengthening Ghana’s human capital development. The President urged stakeholders, including educators, industry leaders, and parents, to support the initiative to ensure its success.
The announcement has been widely welcomed as a bold step toward reducing unemployment and empowering young people with the skills needed to drive innovation and sustainable development in the country.
