Republic Bank (Ghana) PLC has received international recognition for its investment in clean water projects across four communities in Ghana, winning the Climate Finance category at the WSBI-ESBG Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Awards in Bangkok, Thailand.
The award, announced on October 19, 2026, recognizes the bank’s contribution to improving access to clean water and promoting climate resilience through sustainable community development initiatives.
The recognition follows the bank’s implementation of mechanised borehole projects at Adidome Senior High School and Taviefe Senior High School in the Volta Region, Pwalugu in the Upper East Region, and Dingoni in the Northern Region.
The projects were delivered under the bank’s Power to Make a Difference (PMAD) initiative, which seeks to address the water needs of students, school staff and underserved communities through reliable water systems, including solar- and electricity-powered facilities.
The initiative is expected to improve access to safe water while supporting better health, education and living conditions in the beneficiary communities.
Receiving the award on behalf of the bank, Managing Director Dr Benjamin Dzoboku described the recognition as an important milestone in the bank’s commitment to responsible banking and sustainable development.
He stressed that climate finance must produce practical benefits for people, including access to clean water in schools, reliable water sources for households and improved community preparedness in the face of environmental challenges.
According to him, the award reinforces the bank’s belief that financial institutions have an important role to play in addressing environmental concerns and supporting communities to build a more sustainable future.
The recognition also highlights the growing link between water security and climate resilience, particularly as changing rainfall patterns and water scarcity continue to put pressure on communities. Investments in dependable water infrastructure are therefore increasingly important in protecting public health and supporting economic development.
Republic Bank Ghana has identified Good Health and Well-being, Quality Education, Clean Water and Sanitation, and Climate Action as key areas of its contribution to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
The bank says its sustainability approach combines environmental responsibility with social inclusion, recognizing that long-term economic progress depends on healthy communities, resilient businesses and the responsible use of natural resources.
The bank’s efforts also align with the broader sustainability ambitions of its parent company, Republic Financial Holdings Limited, which announced an expanded sustainable finance commitment of 750 million US dollars by 2030 across the Caribbean and Ghana in September 2026.
The commitment is intended to support climate action, women-owned and women-led businesses, and agricultural enterprises.
Republic Bank Ghana says the latest award will further encourage it to strengthen partnerships and invest in initiatives that protect essential resources, improve community resilience and create opportunities for future generations.
The bank maintains that access to clean water remains a critical foundation for sustainable development, particularly in communities where dependable water infrastructure is limited.
