The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organisation will commemorate the 2020 World Food Safety Day today, Sunday, June 7, 2020.
It would be held on the theme: “Food Safety, Everyone’s Business,” to highlight the innumerable benefits of safe food.
A statement from the FDA noted that “currently there is no evidence of food being associated with the transmission of COVID-19.”
It noted that the burden of COVID-19 was enormous adding; “We, therefore, do not need to add foodborne illness.”
The statement said it was important that as people went about their activities at the marketplace, shops/malls, and home, they ate safe food while food joint operators must keep food safe.
It urged the public to observe social distancing, personal and food hygiene, and keep their food safe.
This year’s World Food Safety Day (WFSD) will draw attention and inspire action to help prevent, detect and manage foodborne risks, contributing to food security, human health, economic prosperity, agriculture, market access, tourism, and sustainable development.
Following the success of the first celebration in 2019, this year again WFSD reinforces the call to strengthen the commitment to scale up food safety made by the Addis Ababa Conference and the Geneva Forum in 2019 under the umbrella of “The Future of Food Safety”. WHO, in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is pleased to facilitate Member States’ efforts to celebrate the World Food Safety Day.
