Outgoing Ashantigold defender, Eric Donkor has called on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to set a minimum wage structure for players plying their trade in the country.
The mass exodus of players in the domestic top-flight league has affected the standard of the Ghana Premier League and also the performance of Ghanaian teams in Africa.
Most players who turn out to perform well join other clubs on the continent or move to Europe for greener pastures.
Ghana has been ranked as the second exporter of footballers (311 players) by a survey conducted by CIES report in 2020.
According to Donkor who has over a decade experience on the local scene, salaries given to local players is meagre and is of the view the rampant player exit form the country bound down to that.
In spite of that, he has pleaded with the Ghana FA to implement a minimum wage for players in Ghana in the bid to prevent player exodus.
“My salary at Kotoko was way higher than that of Ashgold. Ghana Football is really lacking behind in terms of the salary players receive. Hopefully, even if the leaders cannot arrive at a minimum wage for us, they should try for the next generation” he told Angel FM.
