There was a near pandemonium at Akyem Takrowase Methodist Basic School in Denkyembuor District of the Eastern Region when pupils in the school run helter-skelter to their homes over Covid-19 vaccination fears.
The school children took to their heels in a total chaotic situation after seeing branded jacket-wearing officials of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) who arrived in the school for covid-19 compliance monitoring on March 3, 2021.
“On seeing the six-member team in their reflective jackets, all the pupils including even toddlers at the KG took their heels, some leaving their school bags behind and calling their mothers for help. In a twinkle of an eye, all the classrooms were empty”
The “team were extremely amazed only to learn from their teachers that they mistook the team for vaccinators who are coming to immunize them on Covid-19. In light of this, the report has been made to the District Education Director for an intensive education on the ongoing vaccination exercise on Covid-19 pandemic to help stopped the false alarms on the Covid-19 immunizations” A member of the NADMO team said.
The government of Ghana has rolled out phase one of Covid-19 immunization after receiving the first batch of 600,000 vaccines.
President Akufo Addo, the first lady, the vice president Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, and the second lady as well as top figures in Ghana including the clergy have taken turns to be vaccinated.
Children below 18 years are however exempted from the exercise.
Public education is underway to educate the public over fears that the vaccine may be harmful to Africans with suspicion of conspiracy theories.
