The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has suspended a former flagbearer aspirant, Stephen Atubiga from the party.
The NDC’s Functional Executive Committee in a two-page letter, accused Mr. Atubiga of making disparaging and unfounded comments against key party members including the party’s election 2020 Campaign Chairman, Professor Joshua Alabi.
He had been previously summoned over a news item in which he made the said remarks.
According to the party, he recanted his comments and pledged “never to do or say anything that would bring the good name of the party into disrepute”.
Mr. Atubiga is said to have committed to this pledge in a letter dated February 26, 2021.
“You also agreed to write officially on your Facebook wall retracting your earlier writings and to write officially to Hon. Joshua Alabi apologizing personally to him and to refrain from such defamatory comments in the future,” the letter indicated.
But the party noted that recent publications on social media attributed to Mr. Atubiga on March 8, March 12 and March 14 among others, “denigrated the Party and individuals in the Party”.
It thus said Mr. Atubiga is in breach of his own promise and “hence not reliable.”
The letter also noted that he failed to write an apology letter to Prof. Alabi.
The party has thus referred Mr. Atubiga to the Disciplinary Committee for a hearing.
“It is our hope that you would co-operate with the Disciplinary Committee for an expeditious determination of your case,” the statement said.
The suspension followed the NDC’s sacking of its former Central Regional Chairman, Allotey Jacobs.
A former Deputy General-Secretary, Samuel Koku Anyidoho was also suspended in February after he was critical of the party online.
