Lawmaker for Abura Asebu Kwamankese and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has stated that appeals to President John Dramani Mahama for the release of businessman and New Patriotic Party (NPP) figure Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Wontumi, will not alter his situation.
According to Mr. Kwakye Ofosu, President Mahama has no involvement in Wontumi’s incarceration and therefore has no authority to determine his fate.
He explained that the matter is being handled through the appropriate legal processes, stressing that the President cannot interfere with the work of the relevant institutions.
“Begging President Mahama won’t change Wontumi’s fate because he has no hand in his incarceration,” Mr. Kwakye Ofosu said.
His comments come amid calls from some individuals and supporters for President Mahama to intervene in the matter and secure Wontumi’s release.
The Minister maintained that such appeals are misplaced, insisting that any decision concerning Wontumi must be determined through the established legal and judicial processes.
He further urged the public to distinguish between the responsibilities of the Executive and the independence of institutions responsible for investigations, prosecution and the administration of justice.
