Toyota Tsusho Corporation had offered some three hundred and thirty-four (334) employment opportunities to young Ghanaian graduates at its office in Tema-Accra, according to President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
The beneficiaries are from the University of Ghana, the University of Cape Coast, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, the George Grant University of Mines and Technology, and some technical and vocational institutions.
The decision was taken by Toyota Tsusho to undertake the investment, according to the President, has come at a very opportune time in Ghana’s development, as it serves as a major boost to ongoing efforts by Government to hasten the nation’s economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
On Tuesday, 29th June 2021, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo commissioned the Toyota Tsusho Vehicle Assembly Plant, which is assembling some models of Toyota and Suzuki vehicles in the country.
President stressed that new and highly skilled jobs are being created, the use of foreign exchange to import secondhand vehicles will be reduced, and, at the same time, the exports of Made in Ghana cars to other African markets will earn our nation much needed foreign exchange.
The planned production capacity of the new plant is 1,300 units annually, and the plant is going to conduct SKD production of the Toyota Hilux pickup truck.
With the establishment of TTMG, Toyota Tsusho Group will have vehicle production sites in five African countries following Kenya, Egypt, Nigeria, and Rwanda. In addition to engaging in the automobile sales business, Toyota Tsusho will perform local production tailored to market needs, contributing to the development of the automobile industry in Africa.
The US$7 million plants, the first by a Japanese firm in the country, started with the Toyota Hilux pickup model, to be followed by the Suzuki Swift model in 2022, an arrangement which is the first of its kind in West Africa.
