The Ghana Education Service (GES) has dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming that the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy has been cancelled and that parents and guardians have been directed to pay GH¢1,500 for chop boxes, trunks and other items.
In a statement, the GES stressed that Free SHS remains fully in effect and clarified that the Director-General of the Service does not have the authority to cancel the national policy.
The Service therefore urged parents, guardians and the general public to disregard the viral publication and not make any payments to individuals or institutions on the basis of the claim.
GES further cautioned the public against spreading unverified information that could create unnecessary anxiety among prospective students and their families.
The clarification follows social media reports alleging that the government had cancelled Free SHS and introduced a GH¢1,500 payment requirement for items including chop boxes and trunks.
GES has assured the public that any official directive concerning the Free SHS programme will be communicated through the Service’s authorised channels.
