A 35-year-old ex-convict, Danteni Shaiu, has been sentenced to 14 years imprisonment in hard labor for stealing Guinea pepper, also known as alligator (ɛfɔm wisa) worth Ghs 1,200 by the Asamankese Circuit Court presided over by His Honour Ababakari Abass Adams.
The accused pleaded guilty to who he was charged for stealing, contrary with section 124(1) of the criminal offense act 29/60, and was sentenced on his own plea.
Prosecuting, G/Sgt Samuel Owusu said the complainant is a trader and lives at James Town and the accused person is also an ex-convict and tailor in Sabon Zongo, all in Asamankese.
He said the complainant sells Guinea pepper, also known as alligator (ɛfɔm wisa) and for some time now has been detecting theft in her storeroom.
Sergeant Samuel Owusu said on 22/06/2021 at about 12;30pm, the complainant was in her room when she had a distress call from her driver that the accused had stolen one bag of alligator pepper which was on the floor for drying.
Just after the call, the complainant came out from her room and saw some men chasing the suspects, and fortunately, they arrested him few meters away from the complainant’s house and handed him over to the Police.
After investigation, the accused was charged and arraigned before court for prosecution.
