The Member of Parliament of South Deyi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor has stated that the case taken against the government over salaries for presidential wives is not over.
According to him, the case would continue even after the First Lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, and the Second Lady, Samira Bawumia Agreed to reimburse the money paid to them in 2017.
The proposal is being challenged in the Supreme Court by Defeamekpor who claims it is unconstitutional.
Rebecca and Samira announced their decision to decline their wages in press announcements dated July 12 and 13, 2021, after consulting with their husbands, President Akuffo Addo and Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia respectively.
The complaint filed in court to block the payment of wages and allowances to First and Second Ladies, according to the South Dayi MP, will not be affected by this judgement.
“That [the wives of the President and Vice President declining the emoluments] is not the issue. The issue is about the recommendation affecting other occupants of those offices”. He said.
“So it is to affect future applicants of those offices. So all we are saying is if you are so minded bring a Bill to parliament and let us do this properly so that we can look at the conditions of service for the spouse”. He furthered.
On Wednesday, July 7, 2021, the government decided to implement an emolument committee’s recommendation to ensure that the President and Vice President’s wives get paid monthly for their positions.
There have been various reactions, with many pushing against the idea.
Meanwhile, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, a Member of Parliament for the North Tongu District, has retaliated against the First Lady, Rebecca Akuffo-Addo for refusing to accept wages and allowances.
According to him, the rejection is a ruse to make her appear attractive to the public.
