Hundreds of residents in the Volta Region in particular Ketu South Constituency are embarking on a massive demonstration this morning against continuous closure of the land border between Ghana and Togo
The border was closed during the heat of the covid-19 pandemic in 2020 together with air and sea borders however the air border has been opened almost a year ago.
Residents in the Volta region especially communities close to the borders who ply their trade in Togo say the closure has negatively affected their livelihood.
School pupils who also attended school in Togo have been affected.
The conveners of the demonstration dubbed “open our land borders” said in a statement issued on Thursday and signed by Bright Dzila that “we inform the general public that the much-anticipated demonstration” would take place tomorrow, 27th August 2021 in the Ketu South municipality as scheduled.
Having complied with all laid down procedures of law; we wish to inform the general public that the demonstration would come off as scheduled. And, we call on the good people of Ketu South and Ghana as a whole to join drum home our demand for our borders to be opened”.
“We shall converge at the Denu Junction at exactly 7:00am prompt tomorrow, as we embark on this historic demonstration in our red attires. The route shall be as follows: Denu Junction to Makavo Junction throws to Aflao Market and back to Victoria Park All demonstrators are advised to be in the nose masks as we respect the covid 19 protocols.
Meanwhile, the Volta Regional Secretariat of the Opposition National Democratic Congress, NDC, has said in a statement issued by Sorkpa K. Agbleze Volta NDC Regional Communication Officer that they support the demonstration.
“The NDC in the Volta Region wishes to inform the general public that it has thrown its weight behind the noble course of the organizers of the OPEN OUR BORDERS DEMONSTRATION and calls on our teeming supporters to join the demonstration intended to let the Nana Addo government know that his decision to close the land borders is bringing untold hardship on the people of the Volta Region and other border towns in the country”.
As we call on our supporters to join the demonstration, we also call on the organizers to ensure that participants strictly observe all the Covid-19 Protocols”.
