The Bono East Regional Police Command has arrested eight (8) suspected armed robbers believed to be members of the highway robbery gang terrorizing commuters on Kintampo – Gulempe to Tamale highway.
The suspects were arrested on August 27, 2021.
Addressing the media, the Bono East Regional police commander, DCOP Moses Asabagna Atibila said, police acted on intelligence about the hideout of the suspects and quickly swooped on them Friday dawn around 1:30am.
Police retrieved 2 locally manufactured pistols, live cartridges, cutlasses, and Motorbikes from the suspects.
“Police gathered some intelligence that some people in the suburb of Kintampo called Gulempe had arms and they use these arms to terrorize people on that stretch to rob them so police acted on the intelligence moved this morning today 27th August 2021 around 1:30am to 2:00am. we got eight people arrested. Of these eight people two people had locally manufactured pistols “.
He added “the first person was Ali Amadu had one pistol and cartridges, the second person was Issah Seidu he was also in possession of one locally manufactured pistol with 4 live cartridges. The other six persons had four Motorbikes which police suspect were stolen or not legally acquired so we also arrested these people and brought them to the police station. We also found several cutlasses which we believed they use to terrorize people on Kintampo -Tamale road”
The suspects are now in police custody and being prepared to be arraigned before court.
DCOP Atibila tasked all citizenry to help the police in combating crime by giving timely and accurate information about suspected criminals.
The Acting Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare has deployed anti armed robbery squad to the Eastern and Western North regions to combat the high rate of armed robbery attacks in the regions as part of nationwide warfare against armed robbery and violent crimes.
