Residents in Betom a suburb of the Eastern Regional Capital, Koforidua have resorted to open defecation following the closure of a public toilet in the community.
The public toilet serving the community was closed down on Thursday, October 18, 2021.
The toilet facility is said to be full however there is no vacuum truck available at New Juaben South Municipal Assembly to empty the toilet.
“People are defecating all over the place since the closure of the toilet facility. People are defecating in uncompleted Ghana first toilet facility, defecating at the back of people’s houses; some are doing it in polythene bags and throwing them away “a resident said.
Residents fear the situation could cause an outbreak of cholera.
“It is raining nowadays so if care is not taken there could be a cholera outbreak in the area,” a worried resident said.
Assembly Member for Betom Adontua Electoral Area Andrew Diabene told mybrytfmonline.com, operators of the toilet told him it is full but the assembly’s vacuum truck has broken down.
He confirmed that, indeed, residents without toilet facilities in their homes are engaging in open defecation.
