Rhema Assembly of the Assemblies of God Church in New Tafo – Akyem in Abuakwa North Municipality in the Eastern region has constructed and commissioned the longest concrete footbridge in the Municipality to resolve the decade’s flood problem of residents.
The 9 x 205 feet long – footbridge constructed to serve the people of Abominam, Asikafo Amantem was funded by the Church at the cost of seventy-eight thousand, seven hundred and fifty Ghana Cedis (GHc 78,750.00).
Residents have for many decades cried for the construction of a proper footbridge to replace the deplorable wooden bridge which always collapsed by flood during the rainy seasons cutting off the Communities.
School children, traders, and residents became stranded anytime the bridge there was flooding. The situation affected a school in the area as many parents withdrew their children.
Commissioning the project on Sunday, January 30th, 2021, the Resident Minister and Head Pastor of Rhema Assembly of the Assemblies of God Church, Rev. Dr. Emmanuel Odame Obuobi said, the project was funded from the church’s 2020/2021 annual harvest supported by other benevolent individuals.
He said a project is an act of “giving back to the community by the church as the Lord pleases”.
Speaking to the media during the commissioning of the project, Rev. Dr. Odame Obuobi said, developing Ghana is a Civic responsibility for all and not only the Central government.
“We must not always rely on the Central Government; everyone is responsible for the development of his or her immediate community and the nation as a whole.
The government is doing its best with flagship policies like Free Senior High School (FSHS) and others but the success of it depends on all of us as well. As Christians, problem-solving is one of our values and must be practiced accordingly hence this bridge construction by the Church.” said Rev. Dr. Emmanuel Odame Obuobi.
Rev. Dr. Emmanuel Odame Obuobi however did mince words when he attributed Ghana’s stagnated growth to endemic corruption.
“Anytime we go for loans to develop the country, huge sums of the money stay in the pockets of some leaders and do not get to the communities where the ordinary citizens live for developmental projects. The leaders have completely failed the country, and the pace of our development has dwindled and become very slow as a result of corruption and not being honest and properly accounting to the people”.
He reiterated that since the era of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s till now there is clear evidence that the country has not improved in terms of development saying even though God has blessed the country with all the natural resources needed to develop the country.
“Our roads are bad and have become a death trap and it is taking the lives of most of the citizens, our health system is also not in good shape so we need to value the lives of the ordinary citizens to secure their lives,” He said.
He bemoaned the high rate of unemployment which he says threatens the peace and stability of the country in the future.
Rev. Dr. Emmanuel Odame Obuobi, therefore, called on the leadership of the country to develop its human resources and make the citizenry a focal point of the developmental agenda.
Mr. Rev. Charles Darko Yeboah, a formal NDC parliamentary candidate for Abuakwa North constituency was the chairman for the ceremony having contributed already to the construction of the building promised to fund other auxiliary safety barricades to be fixed on the bridge.
Rev Charles Darko Yeboah, popularly called Ozey, Principal of Only Believe Senior High School urged all other local churches to emulate the gesture of Rhema Assemblies of God Church for community development.
