The University of Ghana Medical School (UGMS) which was established by Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the first President of the Republic of Ghana in 1962 has produced a total of 4,510 Medical Doctors so far.
It was quite a daunting task but with the able support of eminent visionaries like the late Prof. C. O. Easmon and others, the School sailed through the difficulties and produced the first batch of locally trained doctors in 1969.
However, the Dean, Management, Faculty, and Staff of the University of Ghana Medical School (UGMS) will launch the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the School on 2nd March 2022.
The University of Medical School has contributed immensely to the establishment of the University of Ghana Dental School, the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, the School of Public Health and the School of Biomedical and Allied Health Sciences, and lastly the University of Ghana School of Pharmacy.
The School also helped to establish the KNUST School of Medicine & Dentistry, University for Development Studies School of Medicine and Health Sciences as well as University of Cape Coast School of Medical Sciences, the University of Health and Allied Sciences School of Medicine, and the two private Medical Schools: Accra College of Medicine and Family Health Medical School.
The Minister of Education, Honourable Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum is the Special Guest and Keynote Speaker for the launch of the anniversary, while the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (ASA), Professor Gordon A. Awandare will be the Chairperson.
The program will also have in attendance, the Minister of Health, Honourable Kwaku Agyeman-Manu, the Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation- Honourable Dr. Kwaku Afriyie, University Senior Management, faculty, staff, students, alumni, UN Agencies, development partners, industry stakeholders, and the media.
