Residents of Akyem Hemang in Fanteakwa South District in the Eastern Region are calling on the Ghana Police Service to embark on a special operation in the community to clamp down on drug peddlers.
According to the residents some individuals in the community are peddling hard drugs to the youth creating insecurity.
The call follows the gruesome murder of an 80 and 79-year-old couple by their grandson.
The suspect Moses Appiah alias Kuffuor allegedly committed the dastardly act Saturday, April 2, 2022, at about 5:30pm after pounding fufu for his now-deceased grandparents Appiah Korang, 80, and Yaa Yeboah,78,
He allegedly hit the heads of the deceased persons multiple times with a pestle and harmer.
The assembly member Johnson Appiah alleged that the suspect was influenced by drugs to kill his grandparents who raised him since age 2 years.
Background
A 21-year-old man has allegedly murdered his grandparents at Akyem Hemang in Fanteakwa South District in the Eastern region and will be arraigned before the court today Monday, April 4, 2022.
The suspect Moses Appiah alias Kuffuor allegedly committed the heinous crime on Saturday, April 2, 2022, at about 5:30pm after pounding fufu for his now-deceased grandparents Appiah Korang, 80, and Yaa Yeboah,78,
He struck the heads of the deceased persons multiple times with a pestle killing them instantly.
A day before the incident, the suspect pulled a machete and threatened to kill the couple but was overpowered and the machete was seized.
The Assembly Member for Akyem Hemang Johnson Appiah the suspect was raised by his now-deceased grandparents since he was two years therefore surprised about his fatal rebellious act.
He alleged that the action of the suspect was influenced by the intake of hard drugs.
The Public Relations Officer of the Eastern Regional Police Command said police have commenced an investigation into the incident.
He said the Chief of the community accompanied by 10 community members arrested and brought the suspect to the police hence detained.
DSP Ebenezer Tetteh said Police investigators proceeded to Hawa Memorial hospital at Osiem where both victims were confirmed dead by Dr. Alhassan Fuseini who was on duty.
Examination of the body revealed deep laceration on the occiput and chest of the deceased person.
The bodies have been deposited at the same hospital morgue pending transfer to the Police hospital in Accra for autopsy.
