President Akufo Addo is expected to cut sod for the construction of the Bunso satellite campus of the University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD) today Friday, May 20, 2022.
The President will be joined by Okyenhene Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, Minister of Education Yaw Osei Adutwum, Korea Ambassador among a host of other dignitaries.
The campus has been designed to have the main Administration Block & ICT Centre.
The School of Agriculture is made up of Classrooms, Laboratories, and Professors’ Office blocks.
The School of Engineering will also have Classrooms, Laboratories, and Professors’ Office block
Other Structures include Cafeteria
Library, Auditorium, Dormitories Staff Residences and Recreational facilities.
The General Infrastructure include Water Supply, Plumbing System, Waste Management and Fire Fighting.
Other ancillary facilities include Mechanical systems, Electrical Substations, Diesel Gensets
Uninterruptible Power Supply and Structured Telecoms Cabling
The University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD), Bunso Project will be funded by the $90m loan facility secured by the Government of Ghana from the Export-Import Bank of Korea.
The project aims to ensure that agriculture benefits from engineering, technology training and research, in line with modern farming methods, and to promote agro-entrepreneurship.
It is expected that the project, when established, will provide leadership in the teaching, research and public outreach across a number of fields and will help address problems that affect our food security and enhance the future competitiveness of Ghana’s industries in furtherance of the government’s ‘Ghana Beyond Aid’ agenda.
The main campus of the University is located in Somanya. UESD was commissioned and operationalized in 2018.
The establishment of the University was initiated by former President John Mahama led government with full funding secured. President Mahama cut sod for the construction of the University in 2016 before leaving office.
The yet to be established Bunso campus was originally planned to be established in Afram Plains but relocated to Akyem Bunso by President Akufo Addo led government.
Bunso Campus is going to be an independent University.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has meanwhile announced the construction of five (5) Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Universities in five out of the six new regions, that is Western North, Savannah, North East, Ahafo and Oti regions.
He said the government was in the process of securing the financial support to fund the construction of the universities.
He added that plans were underway to upgrade the planned Bunso campus of the University of Environment and Sustainable Development into an independent university solely focused on the study of engineering.
He told the house that the “government is in the process of securing financing for the construction of five (5) STEM universities in five (5) new regions, that is Western North, Savannah, North East, Ahafo and Oti Regions. Steps are being taken to turn the planned Bunso campus of the University of Environment and Sustainable Development into a standalone, independent University focused on the study of Engineering.”
