The Abuakwa North Municipality in the Eastern region is facing inadequate police personnel.
Currently the municipality with a population of about 91,297 according to the 2021 population census made up of 44,374 males and 46,923 females, however, has a total of only 45 police personnel.
This means that Police to Civilian Population in the Municipality is 1:2029. Meanwhile, police stations are available in only 3 communities – Akyem New Tafo, Akyem Kukurantumi, and Akyem Osiem.
The Abuakwa North Municipality battled rampant deadly highway robbery attacks for a decade until a recent special operation under the behest of the Inspector General of Police Dr. George Akufo Dampare led to the arrest of members of the notorious highway robbers who terrorized residents of Old Tafo to Anyinasin, Ettukrom to Bunso and Kukurantumi to Koforidua
However, the Municipal Chief Executive for Abuakwa North, Alhaji Umar Bodinga who doubles as the Chairman of the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) is worried about the low number of police personnel and the unavailability of Police stations in many communities.
He told Bryt FM that, the IGP has been informed about the situation through a report on the security situation in the Municipality for more Police officers to the posted as well as logistics including vehicles for patrols.
Residents of Akyem Anyinasin for instance have also added their voices for a police Post to be established in the community to help curb the growing insecurity.
