Leaders of various churches in Yilo and Lower Manya Krobo municipalities have held interdenominational intercessory prayers at Zimmermann Presbyterian Church in Odumase Krobo Sunday evening on the ECG and Krobo feud.
The Christian leaders prayed to God to let peace prevail on the land as the situation is becoming a national security threat.
Meanwhile, the religious groups have since August 7, 2022, formed a Coalition of Religious Bodies under the auspices of the municipal council of Churches in Yilo and Lower Manya Krobo to mediate the impasse between Electricity Company of Ghana, ECG, and Krobo residents.
Members of the Coalition of Religious Bodies mediation committee are Apostle Samuel Gakpetor, Agormanya Area Head of The Church of Pentecost (Chairman), Chairman of Dangme-Tongu Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rev. Abraham Okai Secretary)m to the committee. Other members are Rev. Dr. Stephen Ohipeni Narh, Rev. Father Moses Huadji, Rev. Stephen Narteh, Rev. Joshua Akanyork, and Alhaji Innusah (Chief Imam).
The terms of reference for the mediation committee are to among other things work as neutral arbiters, ensure compromises to facilitate resolution processes taking into consideration the interest of the nation and Kroboland, and ensure peace and tranquility in the municipality.
Chairman of the committee Apostle Samuel Gakpetor, briefing the Church leaders said the committee began its work on August 22, 2022, and has met traditional rulers in the area, met the political heads, the Regional Minister, visited the victims of recent military brutalities, various groups, but hoping to meet ECG management, the Ghana Armed Forces, and other relevant stakeholders for lasting peace.
Meanwhile, the Paramount Chief of Manya Krobo Nene Sakite II has assured that the impasse between residents in the Krobo area and ECG will soon be resolved for peace and tranquility to be restored.
According to Nene Sakite II, the agreement is being reached with ECG and other stakeholders to intensify sensitization on the prepaid metering system for other concerns and misconceptions on the system address while a solution is sorted for overbilling conundrum.
According to Nene Sakite II, the violence and escalating tension on Kroboland is worrying but hopeful the situation will normalize.
Nene Sakite II said this Friday, August 27, 2022, when the National Chairman of the Opposition NDC Samuel Ofosu Ampofo led a delegation from the national leadership of the NDC to pay a working visit to the Lower Manya and Yilo Krobo municipalities as part of the party’s ongoing membership drive and reorganization activities in the Eastern Region.
The impasse between ECG and Krobo residents has existed for many years and led to deadly clashes.
In a recently renewed feud, ECG cut power supply to the Yilo and Manya Krobo area on July 27, 2022, after residents resisted prepaid meter installation and allegedly tampered with transformers.
However, power was restored on August 19, 2022, with the exclusion of the Nuaso community. The military invaded the community brutalized and shot some residents over alleged provocative attacks.
