The South African High Commissioner to Ghana, H.E. Grace Jeanet Mason, called on Samuel Abu Jinapor at the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to discuss matters of mutual concern in the mining industry.
Among others, they discussed the vexed issue of illegal small-scale mining (galamsey) which in South Africa is called Zama Zama.
The minister, Hon. Abu Jinapor was happy to learn that the South African Police has been following the various measures being implemented by the government to deal with illegal mining in our country.
The South African Police have, therefore, decided to send a delegation to Ghana, next week, to study the measures we are implementing and to share knowledge and ideas to deal with Zama Zama.
Issues of illegal mining are not peculiar to Ghana as they exist in almost every country with minerals.
Meanwhile, the Government of President Akufo-Addo is, however, committed to implementing the necessary policies and programmes to deal with this matter. And we will not relent in our efforts until we come to grips with this menace.
