Constituency Executives of the opposition National Democratic Congress NDC in the Asuogyaman in Eastern region have accused the New Patriotic Party NPP for making everything possible to register non- residents in the Limited Voters Registration Exercise in the Constitution.
According to the NDC, some NPP Constituency Executives in connivance with some officials of the Electoral Commission engaged in various infractions that marred the sanctity of the registration exercise.
Addressing the media at the party office in Atimpoku, the Constituency Secretary of the NDC , Comrade Clement Amegatse said the NPP bused applicants from Ketu North and Lower Manya Krobo constituencies which the vehicles were intercepted by the help of the military and handed over to the police but were subsequently released.
Some two non- resident applicants were also arrested after the review committee found them guilty but others runaway upon.
“the crooks resourced with the poor overburdened tax payers money have marred the peaceful registration process in Asuogyaman by busing persons from other constituencies mostly Ketu North and Lower Manya Krobo Constituencies to register in Asuogyaman to help boost their votes in the upcoming 2024 Parliamentary and Presidential Elections. On Thursday 21st, September, 2023 intelligence gathered indicates that about 3 buses full of persons from Ketu North who are entering Asuogyaman to be illegally registered”
He continued “This was followed up swiftly with surveillance and on 23rd September they were finally brought to the registration center for their names to be written in the book for their registration. Then on Sunday they were finally brought to the registration to be registered and our agents challenged almost all of them for Non- Residents”
Clement Amegatse further said , ” Our suspicions were finally confirmed when the chairman of the Review Committee Nana Akowua , Chief of Powmu ordered for the arrest and detention of two of them before the panel namely ( Benjamin Dzreke and Promise Kumevor) who they confirmed were from Ketu North and not from Asuogyaman Constituency upon interrogation and the others who were waiting for their turn to face the committee flee same as the others also in the queue to register yesterday”.
Clement Amegatse therefore called on the EC for an extension of the Limited Voters Registration Exercise .
He said 4000 new voters were expected to register in Asuogyaman but only about 3, 041 were able to register adding that many senior high school students were unable to register due to failure by EC to extend the registration date.
