Accra, Ghana – Kenneth Adjei, the Minister-designate for Works, Housing, and Water Resources, has assured that he will engage stakeholders before making any decisions regarding the potential privatization of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL).
During his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee, Mr. Adjei addressed concerns about the future of the state-owned water utility.
Responding to questions from lawmakers, he emphasized the importance of broad consultations in determining the best course of action for the company, which is responsible for the country’s urban water supply.
“I will consult stakeholders on the potential privatization of the Water Company Limited,” Mr. Adjei stated, highlighting the need for inclusive decision-making. His remarks come amid ongoing discussions on the sustainability and efficiency of Ghana’s water supply system, with some advocating for private sector involvement to enhance service delivery, while others caution against potential accessibility and affordability issues.
The issue of privatization has been a contentious topic, with some experts arguing that private investment could improve infrastructure and efficiency, while others fear it may lead to higher costs for consumers. Mr. Adjei’s commitment to dialogue suggests that the government is weighing its options carefully.
As the vetting process continues, the minister-designate’s stance on water management is expected to be closely scrutinized, given the critical role of water supply in national development.
