The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has issued a decisive ultimatum to former Ghanaian Finance Minister Kenneth Nana Yaw Ofori-Atta, demanding his presence for questioning in connection with five high-profile corruption investigations.
Ofori-Atta has been ordered to appear before the OSP by June 2, 2025, or risk being reclassified as a wanted fugitive. According to an official statement released on March 17, 2025, failure to comply will trigger international extradition measures, including an Interpol Red Notice, effectively placing him on a global watchlist.
Legal Battle vs. Corruption Crackdown
This latest development follows a lawsuit filed by Ofori-Atta, contesting an earlier declaration by the OSP that labeled him a fugitive. While the legal battle unfolds, the OSP remains steadfast, asserting that his physical appearance is non-negotiable and crucial to its fight against high-level government corruption.
The Allegations Against Ofori-Atta
As Ghana’s Finance Minister under the Akufo-Addo administration, Ofori-Atta was at the center of numerous corruption allegations, including:
Misappropriation of public funds
Abuse of office
Corrupt procurement practices
The OSP, tasked with investigating corruption-related offenses, identified him as the prime suspect in at least five cases. When initial attempts to question him failed, he was declared a wanted person. However, Ofori-Atta later assured authorities that he would cooperate and requested the removal of his name from the wanted list. The OSP complied but is now taking a hard stance after he initiated legal proceedings against them.
The Countdown Begins
With the June 2 deadline looming, the OSP has made it clear: Ofori-Atta must appear in person. If he fails to do so, the consequences will be severe—his status as a fugitive will be reinstated, and an international manhunt could follow.
As the legal drama intensifies, all eyes are on the former finance minister. Will he comply, or will Ghana witness another high-profile corruption showdown on the global stage?
