The Eastern Regional Directorate of the National Centre for Culture has announced the commencement of its 2026 vocational skills training programme aimed at equipping young people and unemployed persons with practical skills for self-employment.
Speaking ahead of the programme, the Eastern Regional Director of the National Centre for Culture, Dr. Dorcas Salamatu Alhassan, said the initiative was introduced to provide employable skills to people, particularly the youth, who are unable to secure jobs after completing school. She noted that the programme is also open to people in white-collar professions who wish to acquire additional vocational skills, explaining that formal sector jobs have become limited and many people need alternative sources of income.
Dr. Alhassan explained that the skills training programme is a legacy initiative started by Madam Oparebea, who successfully implemented it while serving as the Central Regional Director of the National Centre for Culture. After her transfer to the Eastern Region, she engaged the regional management, and together they agreed to introduce the programme in the region.
According to Dr. Alhassan, the maiden edition held in the Eastern Region last year was successful and attracted many participants. However, she disclosed that the major challenge was the lack of adequate training materials and equipment needed for practical lessons.
She therefore appealed to the government and other stakeholders to provide financial support to enable the Centre to purchase the necessary training materials and expand the programme to benefit more people.
Dr. Alhassan announced that this year’s training programme will begin on Monday, July 27, 2026, and end on Friday, August 28, 2026, spanning one month. Participants will receive practical training in various vocational skills, including sewing, event decoration, bead making, and several other crafts designed to promote entrepreneurship and self-reliance.
She encouraged young people and anyone interested in acquiring practical skills to take advantage of the opportunity, stressing that vocational training remains an important pathway to job creation and economic empowerment.
