The President of Ghana H.E John Dramani Mahama has commended engineers and workers of GRIDCO and VRA for the full restoration of the Akosombo Hydro Plant following the recent fire outbreak at Akosombo Generation Station Switchyard Control room of GRIDCO.
Celebrating workers on May Day in Koforidua in the Eastern region, the President recounted that the devastating fire outbreak which led to the recent power outages has caused distractions and wreaked havoc on the people livelihood.
According to the President, “as of last night 30th April, 2026 the GRIDCO and VRA Engineers working together have been able to by-pass the burnt out control room and have re-started all the six turbines at the Akosombo generating station , as of last night the Akosombo Hydro Electric Dam is fully operational”
“I want to use this occasion to celebrate the Engineers of GRIDCO and VRA for the hardwork and ingenuity they put into restoring the Hydro Plant to full operation, this Engineers are living testament to the fact that Ghanaian workers are the nations most valuable assets” the President said.
On the other hand , the General Secretary of Trades Union Congress (TUC) Joshua Ansah lauded government for paying its indebtedness to SSNIT but appealed to government to pay all penalties owe SSNIT.
The TUC General Secretary called on government to assist Ghana Cocobod to address all issues relating to cocoa particularly the producer price of cocoa as well as cocoa in stock facing purchasing challenges by the buying companies.
On the issue of labour right as Ghana celebrate worker, Mr. Joshua Ansah expressed worried on the trend of abuse of workers right saying in the last few years there has been a surge in global rights abuse.
“Workers are victimised for opting to join or form a union ,some employers have turn redundancy into a catch way into labour substitution , workers are declared redundant and shortly there after the same job reappears under private employment agencies often under inferior conditions and legal protection”
“In the public sector we are witnessing increasing politicization, workers are being promoted transferred, rewarded and punished on the basis of their actual or perceived political affiliation with the escuse that the other party did same”
“It places the country and its institutions on the road to the abys , we need to work together to complete the reform of the labour law to give workers more and stronger protection”
He therefore appealed to government to adopt a policy that will compel employers to give a worker a reason for terminating their employment.
He also noted that “Organise Labour commends government for revoking LI.2462 which would have permitted mining in forest reserves and further challenged the President to lead a final hand slot on galamsey to protect water bodies and forest reserves”
