Three people have been confirmed dead while 11 others sustained critical injuries following a devastating road crash at Ajumako Kokoben in the Ajumako Enyan Essiam District of the Central Region.
The fatal accident involved a Toyota Isuzu pickup truck with registration number GE 1361-25 and a Toyota Voxy bearing registration number CN 478-26.
Preliminary investigations by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) indicate that the Toyota Voxy driver allegedly attempted to overtake another vehicle at high speed but encountered poor visibility due to a thick cloud of dust along the road.
Investigators suspect that the driver failed to notice the oncoming Isuzu pickup, leading to a violent head-on collision that left both vehicles mangled and several passengers trapped in the wreckage.
Firefighters from the Breman Asikuma Fire Station, led by the Asikuma Fire Commander, DO3 Christian Davidson, responded swiftly after receiving a distress call and launched rescue operations at the scene.
Using specialized rescue equipment, the firefighters extricated four victims who had been trapped inside one of the vehicles. Prior to the arrival of emergency responders, some Good Samaritans and passersby had already rescued seven other victims from the accident scene.
The injured, who suffered varying degrees of injuries, were handed over to personnel from the Ghana National Ambulance Service and other medical teams before being rushed to nearby health facilities for emergency treatment.
Sadly, three victims succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced dead. Their bodies have since been deposited at a nearby mortuary pending identification and further investigations.
The Ghana Police Service has commenced investigations into the exact cause of the crash.
Authorities have meanwhile renewed calls for motorists to avoid dangerous overtaking, adhere to speed limits, and exercise extra caution on dusty roads where visibility is often reduced.
The latest tragedy adds to growing concerns over road safety in the country, with reckless overtaking and excessive speeding continuing to be major causes of fatal accidents on Ghana’s highways.
