The Minister of Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has assured the management of the University for Development Studies (UDS) of the Government’s commitment to supporting the development of the University’s Yendi Campus and its medical school and teaching hospital.
The Minister gave the assurance when the new Vice-Chancellor of UDS, Prof. Mohammed Muniru Iddrisu, paid a courtesy call on him following his appointment.
Hon. Iddrisu said the Government recognised the important role UDS continued to play in expanding access to higher education, particularly for students in the northern part of the country, assuring the Vice-Chancellor and the institution that President John Dramani Mahama’s administration had no intention of micro-managing institutions of higher learning.
He said the Government respected the governance structures of universities, particularly their councils and management, and would continue to work with them to advance the development of higher education.
He therefore urged the University to clearly articulate its needs and provide the necessary justification to enable the Government to assess areas where support could be provided.
