A 16-year-old boy has drowned in an abandoned illegal mining (galamsey) pit at Akyem Aboabo, near the Birim River in the Birim Central Municipality of the Eastern Region.
The deceased, whose identity yet be disclosed was reportedly swimming in the pit yesterday when the incident occurred.
However, his naked body was found floating on the water in the pit Tuesday.He was later retrieved by the locals.
This incident adds to a growing incidents of drowning in mining pits in the region.
It comes week after a mining pit collapsed at Akyem Wankyi in the Denkyembour District, killing at least three illegal miners.
